Product Information
5/8″ Leather Single Buckle
Curb straps are made of leather or chain in various widths. Connected to both sides of a shanked bit, the tightness of a curb strap determines how quickly the leverage of the bit engages. Without the leverage that shanks offer, on a ring snaffle bit the straps are very loose and serve to keep the bit from being pulled out of the side of a horse’s mouth. On snaffle bits, they are sometimes referred to as bit hobbles, and will often be more ornately made with rawhide buttons or maybe a small hair tassle for decoration. It’s well known that a bit is only as severe as the hands of the rider, but the role of the curb strap and its tightness cannot be disregarded. Note: the curb strap should always attach to the bit under where the reins are attached.
