Soft braided leather bosal, 8 Plait, 3⁄8” with a smooth leather braided noseband or leather noseband with rawhide braided sides

Bosals are the nosepiece part of a hackamore outfit, but the terms are often used interchangeably.  Hackamores were the old-time vaqueros’ tool of choice for starting colts, and are still preferred for the initial stages of training by some modern horsemen.  No matter when utilized in the training process, the same principles apply.  Larger diameter bosals are used at the beginning and as training progresses, increasingly smaller bosals are used since the advancing horse should require less contact area to initiate response.  Good fit is imperative.   Feel is facilitated by the combined weight of the heel knot and the wraps of the mecate tied above it.

Bosalitas are smaller diameter bosals used for two-rein or get-down outfits.
