Never underestimate the power of a great curb strap! Capriola’s 5/8″ Leather Double Buckle Curb Strap connects to both sides of a shanked bit, and the tightness of the strap determines how quickly the bit’s leverage engages, a small detail that makes a big difference in communication with your horse.
Without the leverage that shanks offer, curb straps on a ring snaffle bit sit very loose, simply keeping the bit from being pulled out of the side of your horse’s mouth. On snaffle bits, they’re sometimes called bit hobbles, and can be dressed up with rawhide buttons or a small hair tassel for a little extra flair.
It’s well known that a bit is only as severe as the hands of the rider, but the role of the curb strap, and its tightness, is never one to disregard. Note: the curb strap should always attach to the bit under where the reins are attached.
